About the British Library

British Library

Located across a number of sites including its main building in St Pancras, London, the British Library is the national library of the UK and one of the largest research institutions in the world. It receives

a copy of every book and newspaper published in the UK and Ireland and its collection – which contains more than 150 million items in most known languages, including the world’s earliest dated printed book, the Diamond Sutra; the Magna Carta; and Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook – is used by over 16,000 people each day, both on site and online.

The Challenge

The British Library required a manned guarding solution to provide protection for the public areas of the high profile Library. This included carrying out front of house customer service duties and assisting with customer queries, so the British Library was looking for a security service that could balance keeping the premises and property secure and maintaining high standards while doing so in a customer-friendly manner.

Rick Meyer, Head of Security at the British Library, says that the quality of the guards was critical: “A security company that trains and invests in its people and retains its guards is clearly a leader in the market.

“I preferred to work with a smaller company because I didn’t want to be one of a number of contracts serviced by a big, impersonal organisation,” he explains. “I wanted a security company that would value my business, and I wanted my contract to be significant to them.”

“A security company that trains and invests in its people and retains its guards is clearly a leader in the market.”

The Solution

Rick adds that when a contract at the Library is made available, there is a very strict tender process: Axis Security was successful at securing the tender because it offered competitive costs and we felt that it could provide the exceptional level of customer service that we were looking for.

“Axis Security’s officers are very much on the front line at the Library and have to deal with a wide range of problems and situations,” he continues. “Their customer service skills are tested on a daily basis, since the first person that you meet when you walk into the Library is an officer from Axis Security. The visitor experience is very important here and first impressions are critical, so Axis Security plays a vital role within the Library’s customer operation."
