About Charlton Athletic FC

Charlton Athletic FC

Charlton Athletic Football Club, based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London, was founded in 1905. The Valley stadium has been home to Charlton Athletic FC since 1919. During this time, all three sides of the ground have been completely redeveloped so that The Valley is now a modern stadium with a 27,111-person capacity. As one of South-East London’s largest conference and banqueting venues, the stadium is in use seven days a week, hosting events from business meetings and job fairs to parties and weddings.

The Challenge

Charlton Athletic FC was looking for a cleaning provider to help ensure the club’s grounds and stadium are clean and welcoming for fans and visitors.

Andy Curtis, Head of Facilities Management at Charlton Athletic Football Club, says the club was keen to start the season in a good place: “We have had significant investment throughout the club and wanted a partner that could help us keep ahead of the game, to help us do this we engaged Axis Cleaning and Support Services to pre-clean the stadium allowing us to start the season with a clean canvas.”

With a strong heritage in community projects and local engagement, Andy was also hoping to strengthen relationships between the club and its local partners: “We want, and encourage, our service partners to be part of a growing community where we can all add value to the club and the community.”

“Axis Cleaning and Support Services was chosen partly for its competitive pricing structure, but also for the ethos, energy and enthusiasm the company showed which is very much in line with our own club vision.”

The Solution

Initially, Axis Cleaning and Support Services was required to provide extensive preparations of the stadium for match days covering seating areas, access points and all external concourses, using its specialist experience in stadium cleaning as well as providing support during and after matches.

In order to cope with the demands of the extensive venue, Axis has invested in a number of high-powered litter blowers and large pedestrian scrubber/ dryer equipment, as well as having briefed its staff on all aspects of customer service and duties related to ‘the big post match clear-up.’

“Axis Cleaning and Support Services was chosen partly for its competitive pricing structure, but also for the ethos, energy and enthusiasm the company showed which is very much in line with our own club vision,” says Andy.

The club’s existing cleaning staff were transferred to Axis Cleaning and Support Services’ employment under TUPE and the mobilisation of the workforce was a fundamental starting point of the contract.

Jonathan Levine, Axis Group CEO says he is proud to be working with one of London’s most progressive and community-spirited football clubs: “This contract gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the specialist service we can provide to sporting and music stadiums and show how we can add real value to venues of this kind.”
