About NHS Manchester and Salford

NHS Manchester and Salford

The Local Security Management Specialist (LSMS) works with healthcare staff and managers to help protect the NHS. They aim to create a pro-security culture, preventing security breaches, as well as detecting and investigating security incidents.

Their main priorities are tackling violence and abuse against staff and other professionals, and maintaining a safe environment for both staff and service users. They are also responsible for securing property and assets including drugs, prescription forms and hazardous materials.

The Challenge

Axis Security has been a key partner of NHS Manchester since 2005, working with Nick Brice, the Local Security Management Specialist for NHS Manchester. But is was following the high profile Flu and Swine Flu outbreaks that Axis Security achieved more widespread recognition for its ‘value add’. It was tasked with safeguarding the stockpile of antiviral medicines and vaccination drugs – a role which provided a new challenge, according to Axis Security’s Account Manager Brian Worrall:

“The security team had to manage and control the mobile distribution of the medicines, while also supporting the NHS staff in controlling infected flu patients in designated flu centres,” he says. “We were on the frontline delivering the much needed vaccines, while also working to control the spread of the Flu viruses on site. It was quite a task.”

Axis Security had to increase the manned guarding and patrolling presence, and took on additional support officers to cope with the demand: “The vaccines were of huge importance and therefore our security measures reflected this,” he adds.

“Axis Security was one of the only companies capable of providing
an integrated approach to security, and the only company to meet – and actually exceed – the criteria in our tender.”

The Solution

Since 2005, Axis Security has expanded its service delivery from an 84-hour per week manned guarding presence, to a broad range of security services across buildings throughout Greater Manchester. It now provides some 1,600 plus hours per week of static manned guarding, mobile patrols and key holding.

A successful partnership that has resulted in Axis Security being chosen to take on a further significant security project for neighbouring NHS Salford, providing account management and mobile support.

Axis Security now provides mobile patrols to approximately 35 sites within Manchester, which includes a short stay security presence for evening clinics. The static guarding also now covers out-of-hours property security and short notice, high-risk patient assignments.

As well as physical security, Axis Security is also the sole supplier of electronic security systems, with a particular focus on managing CCTV and Access Control.

Nick Brice, the Local Security Management Specialist for NHS Manchester, says that they are benefiting from having a single point of contact: “Having a smaller number of providers affords us greater control and significant cost benefits. Axis Security was one of the only companies capable of providing an integrated approach to security, and the only company to meet, and actually exceed, the criteria in our tender.”

Nick concludes: “The Axis Account Manager’s experience of our standards and requirements benefits not only the team here, but also the security provision on the ground. It really makes the difference.”
