About Octagon Shopping Centre

Octagon Shopping Centre

Octagon Shopping Centre, based in Burton-on-Trent, is a fully enclosed shopping mall and is home to 48 retailers and eateries, including a newly refurbished TK Maxx. The 1980s built shopping centre, is managed by DTZ, a global property services company that manages 6,000 properties in the UK and has a worldwide presence in 208 cities across 52 countries.

The Challenge

The Octagon Shopping Centre required a solid security presence in order to keep properties, employees and the general public safe and secure and Peter Hardingham, Centre Manager at the Shopping Centre, was looking for a security company that would provide a responsive and pro-active management system:

“The approach to management is important because we need our chosen security provider to constantly be on the look out for ways to improve its service and for repeat issues that can be addressed pro-actively.”

Another requirement of the contract was that that the existing employees were retained and the new managerial structure was instilled throughout the entire workforce.

“We have seen an improvement in the way that the officers are managed. Issues are dealt with more pro-actively, which leaves us with less problems to resolve.”

The Solution

In its three-year contract, Axis Security will provide the Octagon Shopping Centre with 216 hours of manned guarding per week, 40 of these will be dedicated supervisor hours.

Axis Security transferred all five of the Shopping Centre’s security staff under TUPE and ensured that mobilisaton went smoothly by clearly communicating all of Axis Security’s working practices, ensuring all first-aid training was up to date and that all officers were dual-licensed – both for CCT V and front-line manned guarding.

Peter commented on the changeover: “The mobilisation went very well, and since then we have seen an improvement in the way the officers are managed. Issues are dealt with more pro-actively, which leaves us with fewer problems to resolve.”

On discussing why Axis Security was chosen in preference to the other five security companies competing for the contract, Peter says that price was not the primary concern: “It was about Axis Security’s managerial structure and operational capabilities, in its proposals for the contract they demonstrated how KPIs are used to effectively and systematically identify and communicate areas of improvement. This approach had a positive impact on Octagon Shopping Centre’s security system.”

Jonathan Levine, Axis Group’s CEO, is pleased to see the company’s strategy working within the shopping centre industry: “Building solid, communicative relationships both with our clients and security officers is the key to our success. We make sure we only promise what we know we can deliver and so become a provider that our clients and security officers can trust.”
