About University of Leeds

University of Leeds

Officially founded in 1904, and tracing its heritage back to the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831, the University of Leeds is a member of the prestigious Russell Group – the 24 leading research universities in the UK – and was ranked 133rd in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2011-2012. It is located on a 98-acre campus and has more than 40,000 staff and students in total.

The Challenge

The University of Leeds has an in-house security team but required additional officers to support its team in carrying out security services, including CCTV monitoring and patrols, library services, and residential and porterage services. It also needed a flexible supply of additional officers that could be provided at short notice to supplement the team for special events.

Alan Cain, Head of Security Services at the University of Leeds, explains that keeping a university secure presents its own challenges: “The sheer scale of the operation is like looking after a small town, and the open nature of the 98-acre campus can make for a very different working environment from protecting a building with easily secured entrances and boundaries.”

The University regularly hosts high profile visitors, including politicians and sportspeople. Alan and his team provided security for the England rugby team during their build-up training for the 2012 Six Nations Championship, and over the summer they were responsible for the security of 245 Chinese Olympic athletes and officials during their six-week stay at  ‘Leeds Gold’, the Official Preparation Camp for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Solution

Axis Security provides eight contracted officers to work at the University, as well as additional officers as and when needed for special events. Alan says that Axis Security secured the contract after going above and beyond expectations in researching the University’s needs and requirements, and offering solutions to the site’s varying challenges: “Of all the companies who bid for the contract, Axis Security put by far the most effort into actually finding out what our needs and requirements were, and this was clearly reflected in the quality of the tender document itself,” he says.

We recently hosted HE Ambassador Daniel Taub, Ambassador of Israel to the Court of St James’,” he continues, “where the standard of professionalism displayed by the Axis Security officers thoroughly justified the decision to appoint Axis Security as the University of Leeds’ security provider.”
