Axis Cleaning and Support Services keeps the sparkle at New Square

Axis Cleaning and Support Services has started a major three-year contract at the newly opened shopping and leisure destination in the heart of West Bromwich – New Square.

The 473,000sq ft retail and leisure development is part of one of the largest regeneration programmes in the UK and opened to the public at the beginning of July. As part of the contract, Axis is providing a team of 10 full time employees with on-site management to look after the centre, whose work began before the site was even opened:

“Axis brought in a team of cleaning specialist to carry out a sparkle clean the night before New Square was officially opened to ensure everything was perfectly polished,” says Centre Manager Steve Burr. “They made a major contribution to creating the right impression from the start.”

On an ongoing basis, the team is on site from 6-00am until 9-00pm, with later working hours to account for the leisure facilities, which include restaurants and a cinema. They are responsible for all cleaning and waste removal duties within the main shopping mall, the management suite, washrooms, service yards and extensive car parks.

To help the team undertake their work efficiently and in particular to aid the process of waste recycling, Axis invested in a new combined sweeper and scrubber drier with the added benefits of also being used for waste movement around the Shopping Centre. The machinery investment was very much welcomed by the client and was designed to help New Square meet its recycling targets, elevating the need for additional machinery, and with the added benefit of being able to offer huge cost reductions for New Square.

As part of the mobilisation project, the necessary training for the ride on sweeper scrubber drier was provided, along with onsite training from Axis Cleaning and Support Services’ dedicated Training Manager. In addition, the Axis Cleaning manager received further training and gained the required security license to be able to deputise for the Centre Manager as and when required. This means amongst other duties, being able to manage the New Square’s emergency evacuation and counter terror procedures.

Steve Burr says that the training and planning put in place prior to, and since the launch, along with the support from the Axis Cleaning and Support Services field team has been second to none: “The team made a superb effort in making the launch a great success and helping to put New Square on the map. I look forward to continuing to work with them to ensure we deliver the best possible standards for our customers.”
